Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
149 PM PDT Thu Apr 24 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
A few strong thunderstorms are possible in parts of Northern and
Central Nevada each afternoon and evening this evening through
Friday evening. A storm system will impact the service area
Saturday evening through Monday morning, resulting in periods of
mountain snow and valley rain. The majority of this precipitation
will fall Sunday.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Friday night
A trough of low pressure will move northeastward from the Pacific
Northwest into Big Sky Country tonight. A few strong thunderstorms
are possible this afternoon and this evening in White Pine,
Southeastern Elko, and Southeastern Eureka Counties. The primary
thunderstorm hazard will be dangerous cloud to ground lightning
strikes and wind gusts near 45 mph. An Eastern Pacific upper-level
area of low pressure will move southeastward just off the coast
of California Friday. Strong, south to southwest winds will
develop Friday ahead of the aforementioned storm system. A Wind
Advisory is in effect for White Pine and Northern Nye Counties
from 11 AM PDT Friday morning until 8 PM PDT Friday evening.
Blowing dust will reduce visibilities at times. Travel will be
difficult, particularly for high profile vehicles. In addition, a
few strong thunderstorms are possible Friday afternoon into Friday
evening in Humboldt, Lander, Northern Elko, and Northern Eureka
Counties. The primary thunderstorm hazard will be dangerous cloud
to ground lightning strikes and wind gusts near 45 mph.
.LONG TERM...Saturday through next Thursday
A low pressure system will move ashore over California on Saturday
afternoon and track northeast over Nevada this weekend through
Monday afternoon, with the center of the low positioned directly
over the Silver State on Saturday afternoon. Cooler temperatures
and precipitation will spread eastward throughout the weekend as
the low progresses. Winds will increase to 15-25 kts on Saturday
afternoon and gusts will reach 30-35 kts due to the approaching
low, especially in central NV near Tonopah and Ely. Highs in the
upper 50s in Humboldt county on Saturday are forecast, and highs
in the 60s are expected everywhere else in NV. A slight chance of
thunderstorms is forecast for parts of northern Humboldt county
on Saturday afternoon and evening due to increasing moisture and
frontogenesis, along with higher CAPE values, which may create
enough instability for a few storms to happen.
The low will be positioned directly over the state on Sunday
morning, then move further east in the afternoon. Highs are
expected to drop to the upper 40s and lower 50s throughout the
region. Despite the cooler temperatures, daytime heating and
convergence, along with increased moisture and CAPE, will result
in a chance of thunderstorms and dry thunderstorms in northeast
and eastern Nevada in the afternoon. The majority of the
precipitation from this system will fall from Saturday night to
Monday morning. Between 0.5 inches to 1 inch of rain is forecast
in the valleys due to mild temperatures. 1-2 inches of snow is
possible in higher elevations, particularly in mountain passes
and areas like Pequop Summit and Ely. Up to 12 inches of snow is
possible in the Ruby Mountains.
Isolated showers on Monday evening will dissipate as the low
moves out of our area. High pressure is expected to return,
resulting in temperatures warming to the mid to upper 70s by the
middle of next week. Apart from a weak shortwave trough bringing
light precipitation to northeastern Nevada on Tuesday afternoon,
high pressure will keep our weather dry through next Thursday.

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions expected at all terminals over the next 24 hours.
Increasing high clouds are expected throughout the afternoon and
into tomorrow morning as a low pressure system moves closer to the
west coast, but ceilings are not forecast to drop below VFR
conditions. Light winds at all terminals this afternoon. Winds at
KELY and KTPH will increase to 20-25 kts tomorrow due to the
approaching low, with gusts reaching 30-35 kts at KTPH and gusts
approaching 40 kts at KELY. Winds will be breezy at all other
terminals tomorrow, with gusts less than 20 kts.
